Our Pastor

Steven William Wagenknecht was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, where his father was pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Having learned the importance of remembering the Lord in his life and seeing the positive impact of his father in people's lives, Steven attended High School at Martin Luther Preparatory School (MLPS) in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. MLPS offered the classes that would prepare him to attend the pastor training school, Northwestern College. He graduated from Northwestern in 1992 with a Bachelor in the Arts degree, with a focus on the classical languages - Greek, Hebrew, Latin, German, and Spanish.

Steven then went on to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin. After two years there, Steven (Esteban) studied Spanish in Monterrey, Mexico, to prepare for a year as vicar in a WELS mission in the Dominican Republic. Since graduating from the seminary in 1996 with a Master's in Divinity degree, he has served as a missionary in three different world missions fields of Latin America - Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico - and in one home mission in Boise, Idaho. He came to Weslaco after pastoring Grace Lutheran in Casa Grande, Arizona, for eight years.

Pastor and Brenda Wagenknecht have been married since 1999. Brenda is an elementary and a special education teacher, now spending operating her on educational consultant business, Hand in Hand Educational Consulting.

Pastor and Brenda have five children. Esther Miriam, husband Chris, and four grandchildren, live in Casa Grande, Arizona. Andrew, Joshua, and Keziah attend college and high school in Arizona. Daniel fills their lives with joy and activity at home.

Since his installation at Abiding Savior June 17th, 2012, Pastor Wagenknecht is looking forward to sharing the Gospel with the people in the Rio Grand Valley. Since he is fluent in Spanish, he offers his services to those who speak Spanish as well. Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone)
